Monsoon Set to Enter North Bengal in 3-4 Days: IMD Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon will likely arrive in North Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, in the next three to four days. This forecast comes as northern districts of West Bengal are already experiencing pre-monsoon showers, with substantial downpours expected soon.

The IMD confirmed that conditions are favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon into parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, although its expected entry date is past the normal date of June 6.

A humid atmosphere prevails in south Bengal, even as some areas receive rain. According to the IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall is anticipated over the next two days in sub-Himalayan districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar.

The IMD also predicted light to moderate rain across southern districts during this period. The most significant rainfall recorded in West Bengal in the past 24 hours, until 8:30 AM on Monday, occurred in Alipurduar, receiving an impressive 133 mm.

Other districts reporting rainfall included Jalpaiguri with 53 mm, Cooch Behar at 18 mm, Darjeeling with 7.8 mm, and Kalimpong, which saw 19 mm.

This timely arrival of the southwest monsoon brings relief to farmers who rely on regular rainfall for agricultural activities. With this weather change, the region expects a boost in water availability for crops and better soil moisture levels.

The IMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely and advises residents to stay updated for any weather alerts. The significant rainfall could result in localised flooding in low-lying areas, making preparedness essential.
