The annual Amarnath Yatra faced suspension from the Baltal route on Friday due to severe weather conditions and to facilitate urgent repair work on the track. Officials confirmed the pause in the pilgrimage activities.
Prior to this, authorities had already suspended the yatra from the Pahalgam route to allow for necessary repairs. The decision aims to ensure the safety of devotees as heavy rains lashed the Baltal area late Thursday, causing a minor flash flood at one location along the path.
Fortunately, no loss of life or property damage has been reported following the floods. This news comes as a relief to both local authorities and the community of pilgrims who have gathered in the region.
Officials stated that due to the adverse weather and ongoing repair work, no pilgrims can proceed towards the holy cave shrine from the Baltal route at this moment. The authorities continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of those participating in the yatra.
Repair work on the vital track is in progress, as the route must be made safe for the thousands of devotees who partake in this sacred journey every year. The annual pilgrimage commenced on July 3, and approximately 4.5 lakh devotees have already paid their respects at the revered cave shrine, which houses a naturally formed ice lingam.
This year’s yatra is set to conclude on August 28, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The local administration encourages those planning to undertake the journey in the coming days to stay updated on weather conditions and official announcements regarding the resumption of the yatra.
